Ed Cyzewski, author of Coffeehouse Theology, wrote an excellent post on the Christian response to California Supreme Court’s upholding of Proposition 8, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman, thus, banning gay marriage. Wherever individual Christians find themselves in this debate, Ed offers good advice, which is, Christians must first and foremost be focusing their time and energy on the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven (which I’m pretty sure Jesus said first). Read his post “Mourning Proposition Eight: Dragging Jesus Through the Mud and Wasting $85 Million” here.
“I’d rather not rant about this Proposition Eight business. I think it’s more appropriate to mourn this mess spear-headed by Christians and Mormons…“

Thanks Evan. It’s encouraging to see the positive response thus far to my post. That so many Christians recognize the importance of putting God’s Kingdom first should give us all hope.
It’s amazing to me how you and other “Christians” have made any involvement in politics the new bogeyman. It’s just like when I was growing up in the Baptist church. There was always a witchunt for something or someone. Why not take the passage from Ed’s blog and apply it to all the time and money you spend on sports. Is that glorifying Christ? I won’t wave an American flag but I’ll wear a Phillies cap, a Phillies jersey, attend Phillies games, watch them on TV, run screaming in the streets following their World Series win, go to the parade and dress like hundreds of thousands other idoits. Is that getting in the way of the Gospel? No, probably not because Evan enjoys sports. Instead lets focus on politics or something else you deem distasteful. How blind you can be.
I like the way Paul speaks of his ministry—he describes himself as a good soldier who has to focus on obeying his commanding officer and completing his mission. Anything that gets in the way of that mission must go.
Christians are here on this earth to share the Gospel, to be agents of God’s Kingdom, and to bring redemption to this world. We’re picking up where Jesus left off: preaching the Good News, healing, and discipling. We can certainly involve ourselves in the matters of our state, however, we must carefully weigh whether these matters have an adverse effect on our mission. If they hinder our mission, then our involvement with the state must go.

Hmmm…your point is well taken. I think Ed’s point, as well as my own, is exactly what you are saying, “If they hinder our mission, then involvement with the state must go.” Sports most certainly can get in the way of the Gospel. It’s not that Ed or I are against political involvement in any way, shape, or form (after all, I did vote). (But let me speak for myself) I am against being “in bed” with the government, which has often been the case from Constantine-forward. I think the Prop 8 thing is part of the “witchhunt.” Conservatives are on a witchhunt against those who are pro gay marriage, and vice versa.
I do have to say, I don’t have this all worked out, but that’s the glory of blogging, that is, ideas can be written down and people can respond.
Thanks!
